Easter holiday accidents death toll rockets

The Zimbabwe Republic Police says 35 people have died compared to 11 last year since the beginning of the Easter holiday.

Police spokesperson, Superintendent Paul Nyathi said 323 accidents have been recorded so far, compared to 154 last year.

He said eight people died and two others were injured last night when their vehicle, which had 10 people, veered off the road while trying to avoid a cow resulting in a collision with a bus coming from the opposite direction at the 220 kilometre peg, near Mvuma along the Harare-Masvingo highway.

Superintendent Nyathi said in Nyanga, five people died while two others were injured after a haulage truck failed to negotiate a steep gradient at the 26 kilometre peg along the Nyaungwe-Rwenya road.

He said the truck then hit four people who were at a bus stop, killing two on the spot and injuring the other two.

Superintendent Nyathi said the driver and two passengers in the truck died after being trapped inside.

He warned people to value life and avoid boarding in pirate vehicles without route authority.

Superintendent Nyathi said haulage trucks should also desist from carrying passengers and stick to their mandate of carrying goods.

Meanwhile, two people died while two others were injured when when a mazda titan truck overturned in a dust road near Dendenyore along the Zaire Chigondo road on Friday.

Mashonaland East ZRP traffic coordinator, Superintendent Enfilda Nyahanana said the driver of the truck failed to negotiate a sharp curve and veered off the road overturning in the process before landing on its side.

Superintendent Nyahanana said passengers were thrown off the vehicle and one of them died on the spot, while the other, who sustained head injuries, was taken to mount St Marys Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The victims have been identified as 65 year old Julia Mudoti of Rakodzi village in Chief Svosve area and 17 year old Munyaradzi Tigome of Eastlea, Harare.
