Johannesburg - Former South African president Nelson Mandela is still in hospital with pneumonia, with no significant change in his condition, the SA presidency says.

"There is no significant change in his condition since the update issued last night [Sunday]," spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement on Monday.

"He spent part of Family Day today with some members of his family, who appreciate the support they have been receiving from the public."

This weekend, Maharaj said Mandela had the water on his lungs drained, helping him breathe after his chest problems flared up again.

Mandela was admitted to an undisclosed hospital just before midnight on Wednesday.

Over the last few months, Mandela had been in hospital a few times. His lengthiest stay was in December, when he spent 18 days in a Pretoria hospital to undergo an operation to remove gallstones and receive treatment for his lung infection.

South Africa's first black president has a long history of lung problems, dating back to the time when he contracted TB while a political prisoner on Robben Island during apartheid.
