A Kadoma-bound bread delivery truck driver was robbed of his vehicle by a gang whose member he had offered a lift at a bogus police roadblock.
The robbers locked the driver at the back and robbed another vehicle using the delivery truck.
The bread delivery truck was stopped at a bogus roadblock near the 102-kilometre peg in Chegutu along the Harare-Bulawayo Road by two men in police uniform who were also wearing reflective sleeves.
They asked the driver, Cleopas Kasowe, to give transport to their colleague who was not in uniform.
He complied and after travelling for about five kilometres the man complained of having stomach pains and asked to relieve himself.
However, after a few minutes he came back together with two other men and they pulled the driver out of the vehicle before locking him up in the container.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that investigations are still in progress.
"I can confirm that we have a case in which two bogus police officers stopped a vehicle and asked the driver to give a lift to their colleague and later robbed him," he said.
Insp Mabgweazara said the robbers made a U-turn towards Harare and on approaching the 102 kilometre peg they overtook and blocked a vehicle belonging to Peter Ngwaru, who was coming from Namibia with two passengers on board.
They ordered him out of the vehicle and searched all of them before locking all of them in Ngwaru's car together with the truck driver.
The three robbers drove off in the bread delivery truck.
At around 4am, the four victims who had been locked up in Ngwaru's car managed to break the fibre roof and unlocked a vehicle door from outside.
The matter was reported and police recovered the vehicle in Norton.
"The vehicle was found dumped in Norton and our investigations are still in progress," he said.
He warned people that they should be careful on approaching roadblocks saying police roadblocks are not manned by only two people unless it is the police highway patrol motorbike.
