18 -YEAR-OLD, Oldest Chikumba of Gaza Chipinge was slapped with a two-year jail term after he was found guilty of chopping off a neighbour's ear with a machete.

Chikumba was convicted of assault of on his own plea of guilty by Chipinge magistrate, Mr Clemence Ngweshiwa last Thursday.

Mr Witness Nyamundaya who represented the State told the court that on March 3 at around 2pm, Chikumba was going home in the company of his two young brothers.

"The children ran into Brighton Chikukwa's maize field where they allegedly broke a maize plant. An incensed Chikukwa then ran after them and gave each of them a slap as retribution for their behaviour," said Mr Nyamundaya.

The accused, however, intervened and a scuffle ensued between the two, which   degenerated into a fistfight. Mr Nyamundaya said it was during the scuffle when Chikumba struck Chikukwa on his head, chopping his ear in the process.

A report was made to the police leading to Chikumba's arrest.

Mr Ngweshiwa said although he was a youthful offender, hacking people with machetes was unforgiveable.

"You directed your machete on a delicate part of the body, the head, which houses the brain and you could have easily killed someone. A custodial sentence will send a strong message to people in this community where the offence is becoming rampant to behave themselves," said Mr Ngweshiwa.
