A RANK marshal, Wanda Maruwa (26), will spend the next 12 months behind bars after he was convicted of assaulting a passenger before throwing him off a moving pick-up truck.
Maruwa was convicted by Chipinge magistrate, Mr Vuso Gapara, who initially sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment, before suspending three months of the sentence on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
It was the State's case that on December 4, 2012, Isaiah Waini, boarded a lift, a Mazda B2200 which was driven by Maruwa's relative along Muuyuumwe- Mhakwe Road in Chimanimani.
When they reached the 20km peg, a scuffle ensued between the two as Waini was allegedly refusing to pay for a small bag that he was in his possession.
Maruwa, however, could have none of it and ordered Waini to disembark, but he refused. Maruwa asked the driver to stop, but before the vehicle had stopped, he slapped Waini and bundled him out of the pick-up.
Waini fell on his shoulders and sustained head and shoulder injuries.
