POLICE have arrested a Macheke man in connection with the murder of Black Rhinos Queens Football Team playmaker, Moreblessing Duwati (19) last Sunday evening.
Alexio Siyanga (26), who was Duwati's boyfriend, was arrested on Thursday.
National police spokesperson Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and said Siyanga was expected to appear in court once investigations were finalised.
"We confirm the arrest of the suspect and investigations have so far revealed that the two had been in love since 2011," he said.
He said on the fateful day Duwati visited Siyanga at his home before she demanded her cellphone which the suspect had taken sometime ago. Duwati is reported to have later asked for a pair of shoes from Siyanga since she was barefooted. Supt Nyathi said Duwati then asked for bus fare to go to Harare, which Siyanga had promised to give her.
"She was then escorted back to her home by the suspect. However, during the night on the same day, it is alleged that she phoned Siyanga inquiring about the money he had promised to give her," he said.
Siyanga is alleged to have invited her to meet him at Buffalo Inn in Macheke and she complied. It is alleged that during their conversation, the two had an altercation that saw Siyanga stab Duwati with a kitchen knife on the neck.
"In a bid to cover up for the act, the suspect took a bottle of tobacco pesticide and tried to force the poison into her (Duwati's') mouth. He sprinkled some of it all over her body before disappearing from the scene," Supt Nyathi said.
Duwati's body was discovered by passersby early on Monday morning.
Duwati joined Black Rhinos Queens last June after she was discovered by a Zifa referees commissioner Moffat Tembo who recommended her to Black Rhinos coach Nesbert Saruchera. Duwati was buried in Macheke on Thursday
