The MDC-T has disqualified a Mutasa South aspiring candidate, Mr Regai Tsunga, for allegedly organising a Bob @88 golf tournament in Mutare last year as factionalism and infighting in the party escalates.
The disqualification ignited demonstrations from party supporters in Mutare at the weekend as they accused the party of dictatorial practices.
Mr Tsunga, a former civil servant but now with a non-governmental organisation, wanted to challenge incumbent MP and former Mutare executive mayor, Mr Misheck Kagurabadza, who is also seeking re-election.
The aspiring candidate is chairperson for a Hillside Golf Club committee in Mutare.
Sources in the party said the national council which met last Wednesday, felt that Mr Tsunga was "actively" involved in the organisation and holding of the tournament, bringing his loyalty to the party in doubt.
"He actually became the brand of the tournament, he became the spokesperson of the tournament saying 'we want to hold a golf tournament in honour of our President'," said a source in the party.
When contacted for comment, Mr Tsunga said he had not been informed of his disqualification but confirmed that he was chairperson of Hillside Golf Club committee that organised Bob @88 golf tournament last year.
