A woman was struck and killed by a commuter omnibus at Harare's Copacabana bus terminus this Wednesday morning.
According to witnesses, the driver of the commuter omnibus was fleeing from police when he hit the woman who died on the spot.
The eye witnesses said, the woman was trying to disembark from the commuter omnibus as it was going to a different destination. They said the commuter omnibus driver who was fleeing the police then hit her and dragged her for some few metres.
"There has been chaos here. The woman was trying to disembark from the kombi as she had realised that it was not going to her destination. She was then dragged by the kombi and she died," said one of the eye witnesses.
When the News crew arrived at the scene of the accident at Copacabana bus terminus the body of the woman had been taken to a local funeral parlour.
However, people who were still milling around the area accused the police of causing chaos at the ranks by hitting windscreens of the commuter omnibuses.
Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the accident but said the commuter omnibus hit the woman and then fled from the scene before he was apprehended.
There was chaos and congestion at Copacabana bus terminus as Harare Street was invaded by the commuter omnibuses.
Motorists appealed to the City of Harare to find a lasting solution to the problem of commuter omnibuses saying holding points should be located outside the central business district (CBD).
Observers believe the City of Harare should come up with an effective urban transportation system as the commuter omnibuses are causing confusion in the CBD.
The available ranks are not enough to accommodate the increasing volumes of traffic.
