President Mugabe is due to address a potentially stormy politburo meeting today where he is expected to crack the whip in a desperate bid to save his faction-ridden Zanu-PF party from further division.
The meeting follows reports that top party officials from Manicalalnd province allegedly burnt the midnight candle last Friday drafting a petition to President Mugabe to rein in party secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa.
Zanu-PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo confirmed today's meeting, but said he was not yet aware of the agenda.
Unnamed insiders said the Zanu-PF Politburo meeting, to be held today primarily to set rules for primary elections to select party candidates for the upcoming general election, could end inconclusively because of deep-rooted divisions on how to proceed.
Mugabe would use today's extraordinary Zanu-PF Politburo meeting to try and quell infighting in the party.
He is also expected to rally his cadres for an epic battle against an unpredictable MDC-T.
