Five people last week appeared in court for facing murder charges after they allegedly teamed up and fatally assaulted a man they suspected of stealing from them at a farm in Beatrice.
Pfumaimombe Nhenda (39) and his second wife Spiwe Chibaya, Langton Marara (33), Ellah Chigwida and Paradzai Mandizvidza all of Tivolli Farm in Beatrice were not formally charged with murder when they appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini.
They were remanded in custody to April 24.
Mr Jarabini advised the five to seek bail at the High Court.
According to the indictment papers, on April 5, and at around 2.15am, Nhenda, Mandizvidza and Marara armed themselves with an axe, stick and sjambok respectively and went for the now deceased Publisher Luckson who was sleeping at Phillis Tonera's place.
Nhenda allegedly approached Luckson and tied his hands together before his attempt to strike him with an axe was blocked by Marara.
It is alleged that Nhenda reached for the sjambok and whipped Luckson while kicking him in the face several times.
Mandizvidza joined in the assault. Luckson bolted from the scene into the nearby maize field with the trio in hot pursuit. They caught up with him and continued to assault him.
They force-marched him to Nhenda's place and on arrival, Nhenda set his dogs on Luckson.
The vicious dogs mauled Luckson on the legs and this time Chibaya reportedly came out of her bedroom hut and joined in the assault.
After the assault, they hired a taxi and took Luckson to Hopley Farm for indications and on their way back, his condition deteriorated.
They took him to the police station where he was pronounced dead on arrival leading to the arrest of the five.
Mr Lovet Muringwa prosecuted.
