Prison officers accused of selling AK-47 rounds of ammunition

TWO members of the Zimbabwe Prison Services were arrested recently for illegally selling AK-47 rounds of ammunition.
The pair, Stancelous Chirimuuta (27) and Justine Nyachiwowo (29) both of Whawha Medium Prison residential camp appeared before Gweru provincial magistrate Mrs Phathekile Msipa to answer to charges of illegally selling war ammunition without a licence.
They pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody to tomorrow.
The State as represented by Ms Yeukai Mugumba alleged that .on a date unknown to the prosecutor but in March last year, Chirimuuta went to a shooting competition at Cleveland Shooting Range in Harare.
Ms Mugumba said Chirimuuta remained with 17 rounds of 7,62 by 39mm caliber ammunition for an AK-47 assault rifle. .
The court heard that after the competition, Chirimuuta did not handover the remaining rounds to the authorities.
Ms Mugumba said in January this year Chirimuuta was approached by Nyachiwowo who is his workmate and they connived to sell the ammunition. The court heard that the rounds of ammunition were taken by Nyachiwowo who had met a prospective buyer earlier.
Ms Mugumba said on 21 March, Nyachiwowo then sold the ammunition to Mr Nomore Nyoni at a gambling school at Calter Garage yard.
The court heard that some gamblers witnessed the transaction and alerted detectives.
Ms Mugumba said Nyachiwowo was arrested and he implicated Chirimuuta.
