No political party regalia will be allowed into all the stadiums countrywide during the 33rd Independence Day celebrations on Thursday, Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo has said.

Minister Chombo, who chairs the Independence Day organising taskforce, yesterday said the event is a national one and people should not identify themselves along party lines.

"We are encouraging all parties to mobilise their members and come in their numbers," he said.

"There should be unity despite the different political affiliations and as such people are not allowed to put on party regalia because it is not a party event."

Minister Chombo said the nation was "ready to roll" to mark the independence celebrations.

"Everything is going on well in terms of preparations in all the provinces and security agents and school children are busy with their rehearsals," he said. "We have already sent invitations to traditional leaders and a lot of festivies have been lined up for the big day. In Harare, the festivies will be after the main event at the National Sports Stadium."

Minister Chombo said in some provinces, people had organised celebrations at ward level. "In places where the main centres of celebration will be too far, people have lined up their own local activities through contributions and this is a welcome development as no one wants to be left out."
