POLICE have launched an investigation after the former Daily News editor Geoffrey Nyarota accused an MDC-T MP whom he is challenging in the Makoni South primary election of threatening him with death.
Lawmaker Pishai Muchauraya confirmed on Monday that police had asked him to report to a police station to answer questions following a complaint by Nyarota.
Nyarota, 62, said Monday he was disappointed that Muchauraya had responded to the February 28 police complaint by going to the media to launch a "scathing and unwarranted attack on me".
Nyarota said: "He will appear in court in due course. I have no wish whatsoever to engage Honourable Muchauraya outside court on matters pertaining to this death threat.
"The Honourable MP and I are currently engaged in an election campaign to represent Makoni South constituency in parliament. I have no wish to engage him about his eligibility or otherwise through abusive statements issued through the media.
"The voters of Makoni South are the best judges of which candidate - and there are four of us - they want to represent them in the august House."
The MDC-T's rules on primary elections say incumbent MPs will go through what is known as a "confirmation process" in which members must pass a confidence vote. Those who fail will then go through a full primary election against challengers like Nyarota who have been approved by the party.
No date has been set for the MDC-T's primary elections, but officials say they are likely to be hld shortly after the April 18 Independence Day celebrations.
The party is bracing for general elections due later this year.
