Six True Gospel Apostolic Faith church members, including the leader, have been arrested in Chitungwiza on allegations of burning the legs of two other members as punishment for talking during a church service on Sunday morning.
The injured, who are aged 21 and 14, were yesterday still admitted to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, while the six are assisting police with investigations.
The incident occurred at an open area in Chitungwiza Industrial site.
Acting Harare provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube yesterday confirmed the incident.
She said the six were expected to appear in court soon.
They are the church leader Justin Nguni (35), Courage Macheka (24), Martin Mazvazvido (43), Jesca Mushakavanhu (40), Clifford Murota (37) and Richard Rushaya (16).
"The two were accused of talking while the church leader, Nguni, was addressing at the church service yesterday (Sunday) at around 9am in Chitungwiza," Asst Insp Dube said.
It is alleged that as punishment, the two were forced to stand near a fire place while the six suspects were on guard, holding their hands so that they would not escape.
The two then fell onto the fire, resulting in the 21-year-old being seriously burnt on both legs, while the 14-year-old had his left leg burnt.
A report was made to the police and the two were taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for treatment and they were reported to be in a stable condition.
"We have since arrested the six suspects in connection with the case and they are still in custody," Asst Insp Dube said.
