Two robbers, one of them a former policeman who allegedly ambushed a motorist while he had stopped at a lay-bye to urinate and got away with US$3,000 and a cellphone, have been arrested.
This comes barely a couple of weeks after another motorist from Masvingo's Riverside suburb, Mr Edward Kurwakumira (30), was in January robbed of cash, cellphone and clothes after he parked his vehicle intending to urinate at the 10-km peg along the Masvingo-Harare road.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the two were arrested on Friday after police received a tip-off from members of the public. He identified the two as Godfrey Musunza (32) and Munyaradzi Matinhire (25), both of no fixed abode.
Insp Zhanero said on 10 February, Mr Tafirei Makoni of Chitungwiza who was travelling from Beitbridge to Harare was attacked when he had stopped at a lay-bye to relieve himself.
"On the day in question, Mr Makoni was driving his unnamed vehicle along the Masvingo-Harare Road. When he arrived at a lay-bye at the 20km peg, he disembarked and got into a nearby bush to relieve himself. When he returned, he saw two men armed with logs approaching his vehicle. Before he could get into his car, they demanded cash and started assaulting him with logs before getting away with cash and a Nokia cellphone which they took from his car. The total value of items lost was US$3,060 and northing was recovered," said Insp Zhanero.
He said Mr Makoni sustained facial injuries and received treatment at Masvingo General Hospital and has since been discharged. His condition is said to be stable.
"The suspects have been on the run until they were arrested at one of the watering holes in Masvingo by detectives on Friday night while they were having a good time," said Insp Zhanero.
