The Standing Committee of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formation led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai met in Harare on Wednesday to review an appeal by disqualified candidates who wanted to participate in the party's primary elections ahead of this year's crucial national polls.

At least 1,200 people applied to contest in the primaries on the party's ticket but 200 were disqualified following a vetting process conducted by the party's National Executive and National Council early this month.

Forty-two members appealed against their disqualification and the Standing Committee approved 30 candidates for the primary elections.

Party spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said the committee also agreed that men will not be allowed to contest in constituencies currently held by women.

The spokesman also announced that party primary elections are now going to be held from May 3 starting with what he termed "orphaned constituencies", which are not under the MDC-T, followed by the confirmation of current sitting lawmakers.

Mr. Mwonzora said the primaries will be held in different provinces at dates yet to be determined by the party.
