TWO young girls, aged seven and eleven, one of them who lives in the streets, were recently raped at Aloe Park by an unknown man, who vanished soon after finishing the act.
The rape incident has left many calling for responsible authorities to protect children in the streets, particularly the girl child as they are vulnerable to various forms of abuse, the common of all being sexual abuse.
Police have also urged members of the public to be wary of perennial rapists who are on the prowl targeting girls who do not have a place they call home.
The incident happened at around 11am.
The seven-year-old raped girl was sent by her mother to sell brooms in the city in the company of a 12-year-old friend. Upon reaching a local supermarket, the two met another girl, aged 11.
They went to Miekles Park public toilet where they met an unidentified man, who lured them to Aloe Park, opposite Sakunda Service Station.
"The man grabbed the seven-year-old girl and raped her twice in full view of the two other girls. He also raped the 11-year-old girl twice. They went away after the incident," said assistant Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda.
The following day, the seven-year-old girl's mother noticed that her daughter was not walking properly. Upon being quizzed, she divulged that she was raped."
The rapist is still at large and police are appealing to members of the public with information leading to his arrest to contact the nearest police station.
In an interview with various children of no fixed abode in the city, it emerged that most of them are too weak to turn down sexual advances from older men and other homeless children since there is no one to protect them.
Said one homeless boy: "We have a girlfriend who sleeps there (near Manyati Bar).
"Whenever anyone feels like having sex, he goes to her. She does not mind about anything. I strongly believe that she is the one who was raped at the park (Aloe). She is too weak to protect herself. She stays in the streets and sometimes she engages in sexual encounters with most of us (street kids) without protection, yet she is only 11."
Another boy said: "Rape is no longer a crime to us. It is like a hobby because we have nothing much to do."
Meanwhile, police are looking for a Chipinge man, Dick Machando (31) who last week allegedly raped a 62-year-old woman and vanished.
The incident happened at around 6pm when the raped victim (name withheld) who resides in Maunganidze Village under Chief Mutema was coming from Changadzi Business Centre.
Dick allegedly pushed the elderly woman to the ground before raping her once.
