A 36-YEAR-OLD visually impaired Mutare woman died on admission at Mutare Provincial Hospital after being knocked down by an unlicenced commuter omnibus driver last Thursday.
Assistant Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda, confirmed the accident, which happened at around 3.30pm.
"Lydia Mawonere (36) was carrying her two-months-old baby, crossing the F Avenue and Second Street intersection and was being led by her daughter, Gracious when the speeding driver, Obey Mudzingwa (19) failed to stop at the intersection and hit them.
"Gracious managed to run, leaving behind her visually impaired mother together with her little sister, who were both knocked down by the speeding kombi," he said. The baby girl survived.
Asst Insp Chananda said Mudzingwa rushed Mawonere and her daughter to Mutare Provincial Hospital where Lydia died upon admission due to serious head injuries.
Mawonere's daughter who sustained deep cuts and bruises is recuperating at the hospital.
Asst Insp Chananda said Mudzingwa would face two charges of culpable homicide and driving without a driver's licence.
