TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD unlicenced kombi driver, Joshua Dzakandwa, will spend the next 26 months behind bars after he was convicted of driving without a licence and crashing a passenger's leg due to his negligent driving.
Dzakandwa was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Mr Vuso Gapare last Friday on two counts of violating Section 6 (51) of the Road Traffic Act.
In the first count, Dzakandwa was slapped with a 15-month jail term, while in the second count of driving without a licence, he was sentenced to nine months.
Prosecuting, Mr Thembalami Dhliwayo, said on October 2, 2012, Dzakandwa of Mpendami Village in Chief Nyashanu's area of Buhera drove a commuter omnibus without a licence and on the same day ran over a passenger's leg due to negligence.
Mr Dhliwayo said upon reaching the 124km peg along the Mutare-Masvingo Road, Dzakandwa who was driving a Toyota Coaster ordered all passengers to disembark saying he was no longer proceeding to Masvingo.
Mr Dhliwayo said Jesica Marambire who was nearer to the exit accordingly disembarked first.
However, Dzakandwa started the engine again intending to drive away from approaching traffic police officers as he had parked on an undesignated spot.
Jesica lost balance and fell to the ground where she was crashed by the left rear wheels of the Toyota Coaster. She sustained a broken bone and was ferried to Birchenough Bridge Hospital for medical attention.
Upon cross-examination by traffic officers, it came to light that Dzakandwa was driving without a driver's licence and was subsequently arrested.
