A 44-YEAR-OLD Department of Immigration officer was recently found dead in his house at Forbes Border Post.

Torevasei Svinurai (44) who was an assistant regional Immigration officer was found dead at around 11am at the Forbes Border Post Immigration offices cottage by Rueben Chitapure who alerted the police.

Police said Chitapure who was a neighbour to the late Svinurai had last seen him the previous day drinking beer.

"The following day, Chitapure and Upenyu Charamba (24) went to Svinurai's house and found the door locked from inside. They unlocked the door after they had pushed the key and dragged it. They found him dead on his bed. Rueben alerted the police who attended the scene."

Assistant Manicaland provincial police spokesman, Assistant Inspector, Luxson Chananda, said Svinurai had been involved in a car accident on March 10 and sustained serious injuries. Although he was later treated at Mutare Provincial Hospital, he had sustained bruises on the head and both chins as well as a swollen left eye.

A plastic container of medical drugs was found next to his bed. His body was taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital for post mortem. He was laid to rest in Buhera last week. Svinurai who joined the Immigration Department in 1995 was born in Buhera. He was officer-in-charge at Chirundu Border Post from 2007 to 2010 before he was transferred to Forbes Border Post in January 2011. He left behind his wife, Ketai and two children.
