Electoral Commission meets political parties

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairperson, Justice Rita Makarau says all voters must first prove by way of documentation where they reside before they can register for voting.
Officially opening the ZEC meeting with political parties in Harare this Monday, Justice Makarau said the first meeting between ZEC and political parties was meant to discuss voter registration, the voters roll and the accreditation of observers.
She said the meeting was important to find solutions and clarity regarding some of the problems and concerns coming from political parties as the nation prepares for harmonised elections.
Justice Makarau said one of the issues that has been problematic in relation to registration on the voters roll is the issue of proof of residence which is important before one can register for voting.
"Our voter registration is ward based. This means that all voters must first prove by way of documentation. Voter registration is a function given to the Registrar General of voters by the electoral law," she said.
More than 18 political parties' representatives out of the registered 25 attended the meeting.
