A 28-year-old Chiredzi man from Chief Gudo area allegedly fatally assaulted a 60-year-old woman accusing her of having stolen his maize.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Independece Day at about 11 pm.
He identified the deceased as Ms Agna Maveni Govisa of Village 5, Lavanga, Headman Jekeche.
He said the suspect was still at large and police had launched a manhunt.
A source said on the fateful day, Taurai Madzinginyidze whose homestead is 200 metres away from Ms Govisa's, allegedly arrived at the deceaseds homestead drunk.
"Madzinginyidze who was coming from a beer drink arrived at Ms Govisa's homestead at around 11pm. He woke Ms Govisa and asked her to come out of her bedroom hut.
"Ms Govisa complied and Madzinginyidze started calling her
names accusing her of stealing maize from his fields," said the source.
It is said Madzinginyidze tripped the complainant to the ground and started assaulting her.
He dragged her'a few'metres from near her bedroom and assaulted her several times on the head using a log.
The assault was witnessed by Ms Govisas 11-year-old nephew Crispen Bobo.
When Madzinginyidze realised that his victim had stopped breathing, he took to his heels and sought refuge at a neighbours house - a kilometre away from the late Ms Govisas homestead The following day at about 6am, Crispen went and notified his father who lives a distance away, about the assault.
The two proceeded to Ms Govisa's homestead where they found her lifeless body lying in the yard.
A report was made to the police who attended the scene but Madzinginyidze was nowhere to be found.
The body was taken to Chiredzi District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
