Airtime dealer loses $10 000

Three armed robbers at the weekend got away with $10 000 cash and two cellphones after raiding an airtime dealer's shop in the city centre. The three, two of them armed with pistols and the other
with a knife raided the airtime dealer at around 7pm on Sunday.
Acting Harare provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube said no arrests had been made and investigations were still in progress.She said the robbers confronted a worker in the shop and ordered him to open a door to the counter but he refused.
One of the robbers then produced a pistol and ordered the victim to comply with their orders.
"The victim was ordered to lie down while the robbers ransacked the shop and they took the money, a Nokia E63 cellphone and a ZTE cellphone before they fled," Asst Insp Dube said.
She said the crime was reported to the police.
Asst Insp Dube appealed to anyone with information that might assist them with investigations to contact any nearest police station.
Cases of armed robbery had decreased following the arrest of some of the notorious criminals who were on the police's most wanted list. According to police crime statistics Harare, recorded 3 102 cases of domestic violence, 63 murder cases, 153 armed robberies, 824 rape cases, 7 763 cases of unlawful entry and 3 083 cases of theft from vehicles in 2012.
The ZRP Harare province has embarked on public awareness campaigns on various crimes.In February, cases of armed robberies had increased in and around Harare with at least five people losing cars, cash, cellphones and valuables at gunpoint during one weekend in separate incidents.
Police say at least 2 000 criminal suspects are roaming the streets after being released on bail pending appeal. Last year, police confirmed that hardcore criminals released from Harare jails were believed to be committing armed robberies and carjackings.
Some of these criminals were reportedly released on bail, bail pending appeal and others were said to have completed their sentences.
