Visiting Malawian President, Dr Joyce Banda has paid tribute to sons and daughters of Zimbabwe who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country.

Dr Banda made the remarks after touring the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

She was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and upon arrival, inspected a quarter guard mounted by the Presidential Guard, before laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Speaking to journalists after the tour, Dr Banda said she is highly impressed by the shrine, adding that there is nothing political about the place, it is just a monument that was established to honour those who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country.

She said her visit is a study tour as Malawi is also establishing a shrine.

Dr Banda said she is inspired by people like the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces President Robert Mugabe who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country.

97 national heroes, including six heroines, are interred at the National Heroes Acre.

Later in the day, President Banda visited Kuwadzana Polyclinic where Harare City Health Director, Dr Stanley Mungofa explained the clinic set up to her.

Dr Banda toured the post natal ward where she showered mothers and their newly born babies with presents.

President Banda commended the Zimbabwean government for its commitment to reduce the number of women who die of pregnancy related diseases.

Dr Banda said she has a passion for maternal health issues and has dedicated her life to ensuring that statistics of women who die while giving birth are reduced.

Dr Banda said Malawi has managed to reduce the maternal ratio from as high as 960 deaths per every 100 000 live births to the current 460 deaths and her government has now engaged traditional chiefs who are working in their communities as part of efforts to reduce the number of pregnancy related deaths.

Harare City Council Town Clerk, Dr Tendai Mahachi later presented a token of appreciation to the Malawian President.
