A Zanu-PF faction believed to be aligned to Defence minister Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly snubbed provincial Independence Day celebrations presided over by Titus Maluleke, governor of the province, who is alleged to be from the rival faction led by Vice-President Joice Mujuru.
Leaders of the faction-ridden province held two separate functions on April 18 - one at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo while the other held a campaign rally in Mashava, about 40km away.
Party insiders said members of the Mnangagwa faction, the majority of them provincial executive members, were conspicuous by their absence at the provincial Uhuru celebrations.
They were allegedly drumming up support for aspiring Masvingo West parliamentary candidate Ezra Chadzamira at Gaths Mine Stadium in the asbestos mining town.
