Chaos marred a public lecture at the City Sports Centre yesterday when little-known Freezim Congress Party attempted to turn the gathering into a political platform to popularise its own agenda.

Freezim Congress Party leader Joseph Busha had to flee from the gathering when scores of University of Zimbabwe students who had come for a lecture dubbed "The economic consequences of past government policies," were angered by his political manoeuvring.

"We were told that there was going to be a public lecture and that we we would also get food, T-shirts, money and beer for free," said one student.

"When we came here we were surprised that Busha was turning the lecture into a political rally. All hell broke loose when students started demanding food, beer, T-shirts and a US$3 payout."

Busha fled from the scene and students started chanting slogans protesting against the Freezim Congress leader.

Busha had hired a bus to ferry the students to the City Sports Centre.

Some of the delegates from Mutoko were also left stranded.

"I just hope and pray that Busha will come back and give us money to go back to Mutoko," said Mrs Tambudzai Kapikinyu, one of the followers.
