Steven Mamvura (60) of Mapunga Village in Bikita and his wife were sleeping in one of the huts when the incident occurred at around 10pm last week on Tuesday.

No one was injured.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said the three huts were set ablaze by unknown assailants and no arrests have been made.

"Mamvura was asleep with his wife when he discovered that the hut he was sleeping in was on fire. The two escaped unhurt and he also observed that two other huts were also on fire," said.

Mamvura called for assistance from neighbours and they only managed to retrieve nine blankets while the other property and the huts were reduced to rubble.

"We have so far established that property worth US$1 290 was destroyed during the inferno. Investigations are underway with a view to establish what transpired," Chief Supt Nyathi said.

He warned all perpetrators of any form of violence that police will not hesitate to arrest them.

"We want to warn any political activists that instigate violence or engage in any form of acts which endangers people's lives that the law will certainly catch up with them," the police spokesman.

In March, Zanu-PF leader for ward 21 in Headlands Cde William Chapepa had his house allegedly petrol-bombed by an MDC-T official.

The suspect, an MDC-T secretary for Headlands Samson Magumura, has since appeared at Rusape magistrates' courts facing charges of petrol-bombing and seriously injuring Cde Chapera and burning his vehicle.

Magumura was facing charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property when he appeared before Rusape provincial magistrate Mr Shingi Mutiro. According to State papers, Magumura and Mr Chapepa are aspiring councillors for Ward 12 in Headlands under their respective party tickets.

Magumura allegedly made the threats on February 13. Magumura and two others still at large allegedly connived to kill Mr Chapepa and to damage his Nissan Vanette kombi.

He allegedly threw the petrol bomb at Mr Chapepa, setting him ablaze and inflicting serious injuries on his legs.

President Mugabe recently said police should deal decisively with anyone involved in political violence irregardless of political affiliation.

Addressing tens of thousands of people gathered at the National Sports Stadium for the 33rd Independence Day anniversary celebrations, the President urged rival political party supporters to co-exist.

The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, also called on the political leadership at all levels to preach and live peace.
