A Gutu man, 40, who allegedly killed five people in a bid to poison his wife's lover has appeared in courts on Friday.
Saini Sakandya (40) of Mushayi Village under Chief Nyamande was not asked to plead to five counts of murder.
Sakandya allegedly sprinkled poison into a pot targeting his wife's alleged lover but the meal was unfortunately shared by the rival and four other members of his family.
Sakandya appeared before Gutu resident magistrate Mr Nyasha Vhitori on Friday and was not asked to plead to five counts of murder.
He was remanded in custody to 20 May and asked to apply to the High Court for bail.
Sakandya is accused of causing the death of Rainos, Enias, Mercy and Enock, all members of the Makuyo family and a relative, Mr Muketwa Magonyo.
The prosecutor, Ms Agatha Gabriel, said on unknown date last month Sakandya had a misunderstanding with his wife over issues of infidelity involving Mr Rainos Makuyo.
Sakandya had heard through the grapevine that his wife had an affair with Mr Rainos Makuyo.
He allegedly hatched a plot to kill his rival and prepared some poisonous concoction before visiting his intended victim who lived in the same village but a few kilometres away.
On reaching Rainos' homestead he went to the kitchen where he found prepared isitshwala on the fire place with no one around.
The State alleges that Sakandya sprinkled the poison which was in powder form into the pot thinking that the food had been prepared for Rainos only.
But the whole Makuyo family ate the food and started complaining of stomach pains.
They were rushed to Gutu Mission Hospital where they died on admission.
A report was made to the police leading to Sakandya's arrest.
Sakandya led the police to his home where he showed them the sample of the powdered poison.
