THREE cunning cattle rustlers were last week ambushed by police detectives and details from the dog section while slaughtering a stolen beast on the summit of a mountain range in Mutare's Dangamvura high-density suburb.

Luck ran out after a witness telephoned the police and reported that he saw three men driving a bull into the mountains.

A crack team made up of Detective Sergeant Dube, Constable Chisango, Detective Constable Buhle and Constable Chimowa together with the canine section tracked the rustlers into the mountains.

Officer Commanding Mutare Central District Police, Chief Superintendent Winston Muzah confirmed the case. He said one suspect was arrested while the other two took to their heels following the raid.

"An unknown person tipped the police saying he saw three people driving a bull into the mountains. Our detectives tracked them and found the three cattle thieves in the process of slaughtering the beast. Two of thieves escaped, but one of them was arrested. He is assisting with investigations," he said.

The arrested suspect is Isaac Muteera of Dangamvura. Police are looking for the other two accomplices, his brother, Credence Muteera and Aleck Mazikana.

Chief Supt Muzah called upon anyone with missing livestock to report at Dangamvura Police Station. He said the arrest of the suspect could be a major beak through by the police with regard to a series of stock thefts reported in the mountain range.

"In December last year we found remains of slaughtered beasts at the same spot our detectives ambushed the three suspects. We hope that the arrested suspect will give us more information and we will be able to account for activities that happened at the summit of the mountain," he said.

During the raid last week, Dangamvura residents who reside on the foot of the mountain were treated to a free movie as the police dogs chased the cattle rustlers in the mountain.

The arrested Muteera was nabbed with the help of a civilian who grabbed him until one of the police dogs came and subdued him. The raid lasted for more than two hours as the suspects were determined to evade arrests.
