The Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Number 20, expected to pave the way for a new supreme law of the land, has gone through its first reading in the Lower House of Assembly.

The first reading was done this Tuesday afternoon in the lower house by the Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Advocate Eric Matinenga.

Minister Matinenga noted that the bill is set to provide for the replacement of the Lancaster House Constitution that came into operation in 1980.

Advocate Matinenga also noted that the new constitution was overwhelmingly approved by the people at the referendum held on March 16 this year.

The second reading of the bill continues this Wednesday and thereafter, debate on the constitution will take place.

If approved by a two thirds majority in both lower and upper [senate] houses, the bill will be sent to the President for signing into law and thereafter be adopted as the supreme law of the land.
