Johannesburg - A man has been killed by a hippo near a dam at Inkwazi Farm in the Modjadjiskloof area in Limpopo, it was reported on Thursday.
Farmworker Colman Rahlaga, 35, was believed to have been walking alone near the dam around 02:00 on Sunday when he was attacked, Warrant Officer Kamedi Seshoka told The Citizen.
He said Rahlaga's body was found at 08:00 on Monday by a security officer.
"Hippos become very aggressive when they have calves and it is very dangerous to walk in the dark, because they are always in the area," said Seshoka.
Rahlaga's family, from Xikuyani village in Giyani, had been informed of his death, the newspaper reported.
Police were visiting other farms in the area to warn people of the threat posed by hippos.
"We are not sure if it's one hippo or if there are others in that area, but residents must be cautious," Seshoka said.
