Zimbabwe Constitution Bill sails through by majority vote
09 May 2013 at 19:14hrs | Views
THE House of Assembly on Thursday passed the Constitution of Zimbabwe Bill by a two thirds majority.
The Bill was passed by 156 MPs who were present in the chamber following muted debate, with the constitution having already been approved by 94 percent of voters in a public referendum on March 16.
The draft constitution needed 140 affirmative votes to meet the two thirds requirement.
The proceedings were marked by a few amendments on the Bill which were a result of repetition of some sections and unclear wording.
The house exploded into song and dance as legislators from across the political divide celebrated the passing of the Bill.
The Bill goes to the Senate next before President Robert Mugabe signs it into law.
