MDC-N - Press Statement in Response to Edmore Veterai
21 Apr 2011 at 19:15hrs | Views
This is in response to: ZANU wants to teach Welshman Ncube how to be Zimbabwean
That our party exists in order to contest and take political power and national leadership is an open secret. Our constitution states that we are going to take power only through democratically accepted constitutional means.
It is a matter of fact that we as a party respect all state institutions including the Police. It is our expectation that in the discharge of their duties they are both professional and non-partisan. But we call for the reform of the uniformed institution so that when our party is in power we have institutions that are not polluted.
Our intention in going to Lupane was to celebrate our Independence Day with our gallant fighter and liberator Moses Mzila Ndlovu. This liberator who operated in Lupane was locked up for speaking out on matters of injustice as clearly articulated by people in Lupane.
It is public knowledge that the police denied us that opportunity to see Mzila and give him our Independence Day present- Solidarity.
Our party fully respects all national holidays and is keenly aware that the essence of independence has lost meaning and must be rescued from ZANUfication. It is also clear to us that Veterai is declaring war against the MDC. It is a clear build up to project our party as a monster to justify dealing with us crudely and violently.
The language that "Teach Welshman Ncube to be Zimbabwean" is reminiscent of what was said during the operations of Gukurahundi, meaning that people should be violently and ruthlessly forced to assume a new identity. It is not a lie that thousands of lives were lost in Matabeleland in the process of being taught to be Zimbabwean. Our party is therefore alert to the meaning of that statement vis a vis the security of Prof. Welshman Ncube and other party cadres.
The statement by Veterai to the effect that we wanted to perform a Hollywood movie style attempt to spring Minister Mzila Ndlovu out of police custody is blatantly false and defamatory. Again to accuse Prof. Ncube of wanting to create a bloodshed is unacceptable demagoguery which seeks to project our party president as an insurgent when he is known to be a democrat par excellence.
It is a reckless statement calling for legal action. People like Veterai who abuse public offices need to face the legal consequences in their individual capacity.Accordingly, the party might sue him in his individual standing as 'Edmore Veterai'
