Tomana wins his war

Attorney General Johannes Tomana has prevailed in his bid to have the Attorney General's Office Act amended in order to retain the independence of the government's top lawyer.

Tomana had been at loggerheads with Justice minister Patrick Chinamasa after he steered the law which created an AG's Office Board in which Tomana was expected to sit without chairing it.

Tomana had objected to that arrangement saying it eroded the independence of the AG's Office as it entailed that any holder of that office can take instructions from the board chairperson when the Constitution says the AG must not be subjected to the directives or influences of anyone.

A new Amendment Bill has since been crafted and is set to be debated in the bicameral Parliament.
