The self-exiled MDC-T treasurer general Roy Bennett on Friday said it "seems bizarre that in our country, police never question why there are so many fatalities and injuries from car accidents involving members of the opposition or high profile critics of the state."
Bennett wrote on Facebook:
Friends, it seems bizarre that in our country, police never question why there are so many fatalities and injuries from car accidents involving members of the opposition or high profile critics of the state. First came the death of Josiah Tongogara in 1979, who disagreed with Mugabe over the formation of a government national unity with ZAPU. Tongogara was firm favourite to become the first President of Zimbabwe with Mugabe as PM. Three marks were found in his upper torso in the post-mortem that appeared to be gunshot wounds but no one was ever prosecuted.
The most famous accident occurred in 2009 when our President was injured and his late wife Mai Tsvangirai was killed. Mugabe said that it could only be explained by the 'hand of god' but was the hand his own? Then his spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, was severely injured in another crash last year. In recent weeks, Edmore Monyoro, the driver and nephew of Alex Magaisa, Morgan's legal and political advisor, was killed again in a car accident. Poor Edmore may have been a victim of an attempted assassination against Magaisa. Unfortunately, if these are real assassination attempts, then it is often the families or friends who suffer in the crossfire. Vice president Thokozani Khupwe's mother, Catherine Mabhiza, and his aide, Timond Dube, passed away when their car was hit by a lorry in 2009.
These are just four incidents in a long history of mysterious car crashes in Zimbabwe. Sydney Malunga, Francis Muswere, Witness Rukarwa, Zororo Duri, Peter Pamire, Moven Mahachi, Winston Changara, and John Nyamande are just some of the names related to Zim politics who have died in car accidents????
Even if these were genuine accidents, then the blame lies in our transport system and road networks, which have deteriorated so drastically in recent decades. Potholes, endless roadblocks and a lack of buses are evident for anyone to see just driving through the country. Whatever the causes of these incidents, there are questions that need to be answered to give peace to the families of the victims.
Hatred and envy can only destroy us. Truth, justice, love and forgiveness will set us free.
