CHIPINGE police have launched a manhunt for an unidentified driver who ran over a 14-year-old vendor at the 107 km peg along Mutare -Masvingo Road recently.

Police confirmed the death of Eunice Chitumbi (14) of Gudyanga near Nyanyadzi in Chief Muusha's area due to injuries sustained as a result of the accident.

It is alleged that on May 19, Eunice and other teenage vendors were selling baobab fruits to travellers near Gudyanga Shopping Centre when she was hit by a speeding car.

"Eunice was hit by an oncoming vehicle as she was crossing the road from the right to the left lane. The driver, however, sped off leaving the teenager writhing in pain," said  Chipinge District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera.

Asst Insp Kadzura said the deceased's father Gibson Chitumbi (47) who was at his homestead, which is  about 100 meters away from the road rushed to the scene where he found his daughter writhing in pain with broken legs and arms. She had also suffered serious head injuries.

"No one among the vendors managed to note the vehicle's registration number as it was getting dark. Eunice was rushed to Birchnough Bridge Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

"Investigations are in progress and we urge anyone with information that may help to approach us. We continue to urge vendors to be vigilant when conducting their business on the roads to avoid loss of life," said Asst Insp  Kadzuraumera.
