A good Samaritan in Harare is regretting the day he offered a helping hand to a stranger. He lost his car to a hitch-hiker he had ferried from the city centre to Mbare suburb.
Mr Dhuvai Chamaona picked up the man at around 4pm on Wednesday last week.
Narrating his ordeal, Mr Chamaona said the hitch-hiker claimed to be a "plainclothes policeman".
"I gave a lift to the man who said he was a police officer. He was going to Mbare.
"When we reached Mbare flats, I parked my car and told him that I wanted to buy some beer at a nearby spot.
"We both disembarked after he said he wanted to use the toilet.
"When I came back, he was in the car. We had beer together.
"After chatting, I went to buy another round of beers, leaving the key in the ignition.
"My car was nowhere to be found when I returned."
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the case.
"He urged members of the public not to trust strangers with their valuables.
