POLICE in Chinhoyi are investigating the origins of a head that was discovered at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital dumpsite at the weekend while being eaten by a dog.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident adding that police were still trying to determine the origin of the head and the sex of the missing body.
"The head of a person was found being eaten by a dog at a dumpsite at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital on Sunday and we are still trying to establish how it ended up there and whose head it is," he said.
A resident at the hospital saw a dog with the head of a person at around 8am while passing through the dumpsite and alerted others.
A report was made at Chemagamba Police Station.
Police attended to the scene and found a head that was in an advanced state of decomposition making it difficult to ascertain the sex of the dead person.
"We are still trying to establish where the other part of the body is and also to complete the puzzle of how the person died," he said.
The head had since been taken to the hospital mortuary.
Efforts to get a comment from medical superintendant Dr Collett Mawire were fruitless as his phone was not reachable yesterday.
Insp Mabgweazara said police were now looking at their missing persons list to see if there could find a match.
