One person died on the spot while six others were seriously injured when a building at the corner Kenneth Kaunda and Orr Street in Harare collapsed.

The deceased was part of a team of construction workers who were renovating the building.

The construction workers fell from the first floor after the shade they were renovating gave in and crashed to the ground, killing one person and injuring four of the workers.

The other two people injured were walking on the pavement under the building's shed.

The building belongs to local businessman, Muhammed Mussa.

When the news crew arrived, the injured people had been ferried to Parirenyatwa hospital while the body of the deceased man was yet to be removed from the scene.

Harare Emergency Services Station Officer, Herbert Chipidza said they responded to the scene immediately and managed to assist victims who were still trapped under the rubble.

The crowd that had gathered however blamed the owner of the building, saying the shade was not constructed to standard since there are no pillars to support it.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Mussa or the construction company's representatives were unsuccessful as they could not be located on the scene of the accident.

Police confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
