A six-month-old baby was burnt to death when a sofa he was left sleeping on caught fire last Saturday at a house at Chikami village in Zvimba district.
Prince Muporomoki died in the morning while the mother had gone to fetch water nearby.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, saying investigations were under way to establish the cause of the incident.
"We received a report of one Prince Muporomoki from Chikami village, Kutama, under Chief Zvimba, who was burnt to death while he was left sleeping on a sofa in the lounge while her mother, Tryphin Siwele (23), went to fetch water outside," he said.
It is alleged that on May 25 Siwele left Prince sleeping on a sofa in the lounge in the company of his three-year-old brother.
Upon returning to her house it is reported that Siwele saw a cloud of smoke coming out of the room were Prince was sleeping. When Siwele entered the room, she found the sofa where her baby was sleeping on fire. This prompted her to shout for help.
Upon hearing the noise the nearby villagers rushed to Siwele's house where they helped her to put out the fire. Their efforts were in vain since the infant was already dead.
