Kombi accident kills 8 people

Eight people died while 11 others were seriously injured after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in burst its left rear tyre, veered off the road, overturned and

rolled several times before landing on its wheels along the Nembudziya-Sanyati Road on Sunday night.

Acting Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the accident which occurred at around 7pm at the 46km-peg along Nembudziya-Sanyati Road.

Insp Mahoko said the commutter omnibus which was being driven by Frank Lupiya of Pfupajena suburb in Chegutu had 19 people on board when tragedy struck.

He said four people died on the spot, two on their way to Sanyati Hospital, while the other two died upon admission at Kadoma Provincial Hospital.

"Eight people died in an accident along Nembudziya-Sanyati Road when a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus they were travelling in burst its left rear tyre. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned and rolled five times before landing on its wheels.

"The other injured passengers were ferried to Kadoma Hospital where they are receiving treatment," he said.

Insp Mahoko said the names of the deceased persons would be disclosed after their next of kins have been informed.

He said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver was exceeding road speed limits.

"I appeal to motorists to adhere to road speed limits to allow them to react when such incidents occur.

They should also check that their vehicles are roadworthy and in proper condition to carry passengers," he said.
