Police in Masvingo yesterday arrested a 25-year-old woman for allegedly making a false report to police that her new-born twin babies had been stolen by four Good Samaritans who had offered her a lift while she was in labour.

Rejoice Mahachi of Maruveke Village in Nyajena communal lands, early this month allegedly made a false report to police in Chiredzi that she was drugged by unknown people who had offered her a lift after she went into labour.

She claimed to have given birth to twins during the course of the journey.

Police started investigating the woman two weeks ago after doctors at Chiredzi district hospital conducted tests which proved that she was never pregnant.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero yesterday said they arrested Mahachi after investigations proved that she never gave birth to twins.

Inspector Zhanero said the woman's motive to lie to police was not yet known but said she would appear in court facing charges of making a false report.

"We arrested Rejoice Mahachi after we found out that she made a false report that she gave birth to twins who were then stolen by some four unknown people after she gave birth in their car.

"The woman will appear in court soon facing charges of making a false report.

:She is currently in custody," said Inspector Zhanero.
