A 36-year-old Chitungwiza man who bashed his naked wife in full view of their children during a domestic dispute escaped a prison term with a $300 fine.
Tichafa Muchemwa of 7 Chivangu Road in Zengeza 3 vented his anger on his wife Voilet Kueri (32) after receiving a call from Kueri's sister advising him to buy their two children some winter clothes.
The incident took place on 22 May at around 6am, when Kueri's sister saw their children not properly dressed during a cold day.
She jokingly called Muchemwa who became angry about the issue.
When Kueri entered their room, she told the court, she was surprised to see her husband seething with anger.
Trouble started when Kueri inquired why he was angry.
Instead of answering, Muchemwa threw his cellphone hitting her on the shoulder and stormed out of the room.
He later returned at around 4pm, but never talked to his wife and left the house only to resurface at around 11pm.
When Kueri asked him to forgive her sister, an argument ensued resulting in Muchemwa punching her twice until she fell to the ground.
After gaining strength, Kueri tried to escape but was punched again on the chest. She screamed for help, prompting their landlord and fellow tenants to rescue her.
They failed to restrain him and he continued assaulting his wife until she collapsed.
He then tore her clothes leaving her naked in full view of their children and he continued punching her in that state.
After that, he tied his wife's legs to stop her from escaping.
Kueri escaped after he fell asleep and reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
He admitted to domestic violence charges before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo who fined him.
In addition, he was sentenced to a wholly suspended 10-month jail term.
Mr Emmanuel Chibondo appeared for the State.
