Preparations for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly have received a major boost from the Chinese government which donated a public address and translation system to be used at the event.
The public address and translation system valued at US$800 000 comes as a timely intervention for tourism authorities who have not received adequate funding from treasury for the hosting of the General Assembly.
The equipment has already been shipped from China and will be in the country by the end of the month, together with a six member technical team.
The Chinese Embassy Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Mr Han Bing told the media that China is committed to helping Zimbabwe successfully co-host the 20th session of the tourism conference this August.
A high level 10 member delegation from China will attend the General Assembly.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Walter Mzembi commended the Chinese government for being the first to respond to the government's calls for assistance in the run up to the tourism event that is being hosted for the 2nd time in Africa since 2007.
"On the 10th of June, the identified sound provider will be in Victoria Falls so that they can start mounting the conference centre so I am happy that the equipment will be here in time for fitting," he said.
Minister Mzembi said the tourism industry will consolidate relations with China in the tourism field by easing visa access to capture the market which is now the highest tourist spending nation at US$102 billion in 2012, overtaking Germany and the USA.
