A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Support Unit sergeant based at Fairbridge in Bulawayo, posted to Cottco Nhembudziya, was on Tuesday fined $100 for assaulting two men accusing them of having laughed at him when a suspect he wanted to arrest ran away from him.
Innocent Khanye (34) pleaded guilty to two counts of assault when he appeared before Gokwe resident magistrate Sheppard Mjanja.
The magistrate convicted and fined him $100 or spending six days in jail.
The court heard that on May 31, at around 3.30pm, Khanye arrived at Sindi Night Club in Gokwe.
He confronted Brain Khumalo of Chief Chireya in Gokwe North, who was sitting in a vehicle outside the night club and asked him about the whereabouts of Kudakwashe Chidakwa, the driver of the vehicle.
Khumalo told him that Chidakwa was inside the night club and the police officer asked him to accompany him.
On meeting Chidakwa, Khanye demanded to know his employment status and Chidakwa told him that he was a neighbourhood watch committee member
Khanye then slapped Chidakwa twice on the face and also turned to Khumalo whom he slapped once on the face.
A report made to the police led to Khanye's arrest.
When asked in court why he assaulted the two, he said they laughed at him when a suspect he wanted to arrest in front of them ran away from him.
