Vehicles without valid licence discs will be impounded beginning today, Zinara and Harare City confirmed yesterday.

Zinara head of administration and human resources Mr Precious Murove said the blitz would be carried with support from Harare City Council and ZRP.

Motorists failing to renew their vehicle licences have prompted the authorities to launch the blitz on Harare streets and major highways leading in and out of the city.

"So far out of a registered vehicle population of 457 949 only 307 097 have been licensed. This means that 150 097 vehicles remain unlicensed.

"We are now chasing them to ensure that they comply in terms of the Act," he said.

Dr Mahachi confirmed the operation.

"All the impounded vehicles would be clamped and towed to our stores where they would pay storage fees," he said.

Dr Mahachi said vehicles would only be released to their owners after the payment of the clamping, towing and storage fees in addition to the licence disc fees.

Vehicles with defects would be referred to vehicle inspection depots where they would be released upon issuance of certificates of fitness.

While Zinara puts the vehicle population at 457 949 the official Central Vehicle Registry vehicle population is around 800 000. Mr Murove said Zinara had set up 300 outlets countrywide to allow for easy purchasing of licensing discs.

"We are happy there are no queues at all countrywide. We will soon be increasing our outlets," he said.

Mr Murove said the blitz would be spreading to other towns and cities soon.

"We will soon be synchronising our records with those of CVR," he said.

It is estimated that over 400 000 vehicles have never registered with Zinara.

Early this year another blitz was carried out resulting in more vehicle owners paying up.
