A CHIVHU man who allegedly stabbed and killed his elder brother last week is battling for life at a Harare hospital after he slit his own throat with a knife in a bid to commit suicide.

Mashonaland East Provincial spokesperson Inspector Bulisani Bhebhe confirmed the incident and said the accused, Last Tinago (29), was expected to appear in court soon after recovery facing charges of killing his brother Mike Tinago (43) at Camel Lagat Farm in Chivhu.

According to police, on May 29, 2013 at around 9:30pm, Last and Mike were seated in the latter's kitchen hut discussing family matters.

During the discussion, Mike ordered Last to pay $30 which he owed his cousin Phillip Nhariro. Last allegedly refused and left the hut, while the deceased followed him for about five metres.

The two continued arguing over the money issue resulting in Last allegedly drawing a multi-blade Okapi knife from his pocket and stabbing Mike in the chest and upper arm.
Mike collapsed and died on the spot, police said.

Last is believed to have then run for about 120m from the scene to his homestead where he slit his own throat using the same knife. He fell to the ground bleeding profusely.

Joshua Mubaira, Mike's cousin, allegedly saw Last collapsing at the doorstep of his bedroom hut and came to his rescue. He took him inside the hut and rendered assistance.

Police in Chivhu attended the scene and the knife was recovered. Last was rushed to Chivhu Hospital from where he was later transferred to Harare.
