A bogus doctor who misrepresented to the public and received pledges amounting to $3 160 on the pretext that he would remit the money to schools in need of financial assistance, was arrested yesterday.
Benjamin Mwadiwa (38), who used the name Dr Blessing Kupa Chidzanga would collect the money from the well-wishers and convert it to his own use.
Acting CID spokesperson Detective Sergeant Sharon Musendo confirmed his arrest.
"We have arrested one Benjamin Mwadiwa who was in the habit of moving around Harare masquerading as Doctor Kupa Chidzanga sourcing money from the public on the pretext that he provided financial assistance to schools and colleges countrywide," said Det Sgt Musendo.
Dt Sgt Musendo said Mwadiwa was arrested after a police report was filed by one Bennedicta Muneri who is one of his victims.
She alleges that on May 13 2013 at around 7pm Mwadiwa misrepresented to Muneri as Dr Kupa Chidzanga and that he was in the process of registering a non-governmental organisation called "Priority Projects Zimbabwe" which empowers high school, college and university students with financial support.
He, however, claimed that he was in the process of setting up other offices in Ruwa and Westlea in Harare.
Muneri, who is a butcher, was duped into signing a fake deal of supplying meat to Mwadiwa and prospective employment worth $2 000 a month which prompted him to make a report to the police.
"He is wanted by Bulawayo CID Suspects where he is believed to have defrauded many people using the same modus operandi," she said.
Dt Sgt Musendo urged the public in Harare and Bulawayo who fell into Mwadiwa's trap to contact CID Serious Frauds squad on 04-753543-6 quoting DR 07/06/2013 as the current reference and, or CID Suspects Bulawayo ER92/12.
