POLICE in Mutoko on Tuesday arrested two teenage boys for killing their friend in a brawl over a girlfriend at Chirombochikuru Village.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza said the police had since released the two teenagers who will appear in court soon facing murder charges.
"We arrested two teenage boys of Chirombochikuru village under Chief Mutoko who severely assaulted Joel Kativhu (17) with wooden sticks following a dispute over a girlfriend. Kativhu died weeks later from the injuries he sustained from the assault," he said.
He said investigations were underway in this case which has shocked villagers in the area. It is alleged that on May 16 the two teenagers met Joel along a footpath where a quarrel over a girlfriend erupted.
The duo picked up sticks and assaulted Joel. However, Joel did not sustain any visible injuries and as a member of the Johanne Masowe Apostolic sect he never went to hospital to seek treatment.
It is alleged that on June 3, he complained of body pain prompting his father Solomon Kativhu to take him to a faith healer identified as Charles Nesango. Joel later died at Nesango's homestead and his father decided to bury him without making a report to the police.
It is reported that the father, in the company of his fellow church mates, were intercepted by police while on their way to bury Joel.
The police later took the body to Mutoko General Hospital for a post-mortem.
Asst Insp Mwanza appealed to members of the public to seek amicable ways of solving disputes rather than fighting.
