Police are investigating a suspected case of murder and suicide after a married couple was found dead in their Highfield lodgings in Harare the morning after neighbours reported hearing
some "nasty" noises coming from their room.
Although investigations are still underway, with the police refusing to divulge the names of the deceased as their next of kin are yet to be informed, it is suspected that the man stabbed his wife before taking his own life.
Police disclosed that they recovered an empty pesticide bottle while the woman had two deep wounds on the chest when they launched investigations at the couple's home on Thursday last week.
Harare Province police spokesperson Inspector Tedious Chibanda confirmed the incident which came to light after suspicious neighbours broke into the couple's home.
"I can confirm that we discovered the dead bodies of a married couple in Highfield. Witnesses say they heard noises from the couple's room the day before they discovered the bodies.
"They say they became suspicious the following morning, broke down the door and found the couple dead.
"At the scene we discovered an empty pesticide bottle and we suspect that the man committed suicide after he stabbed his wife with a knife," he said.
Insp Chibanda called on members of the public to amicably deal with domestic disputes and to report any such cases to the police without delay.
Latest statistics indicate that cases of domestic violence in the country shot up by over 500 percent between 2008 to 2012 with police recording 1 940 cases in 2008, 3 193 cases in 2009, 7 628 cases in 2010, 10 351 cases in 2011 and 10 871 cases last year.
